Triumphant Return of MassMutual Jr. Astronauts!
Galaxy Trek It Is Possible!

August 14, 2017 Hong Kong

The MassMutual Jr. Space Camp 2017, exclusively sponsored and organized by MassMutual Asia Ltd. (MassMutual Asia), has achieved yet another successful touchdown. The eight MassMutual Jr. Astronauts — William Fan, Eric Graff, Cory Ieong, Jasmine Ko, Austin Leung, Charisse Leung, Belle Li and Chloe Suen, have returned from their nine-day space-exploration journey, after successfully completing their missions at the US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

To mark the triumphant return of the Jr. Astronauts, MassMutual Asia today held a Celebration Ceremony in their honor. Program patrons attending the ceremony included Ir Dr Raymond Ho Chung Tai, SBS, MBE, SBStJ., JP; and Mr J.P. Lee, SBS, OBE, JP, Chairman, Agency for Volunteer Service.

The eight Jr. Astronauts staged an enchanting magic spectacular as the curtain raiser to the ceremony today. Space exploration is like magic, it seems to be “impossible” but it can become “possible”. They said that the MassMutual Jr. Space Program made their space dreams come true, enhanced their knowledge, and let them understand by living the “It is Possible!” spirit and taking on challenges, everything is possible.

The space-exploration journey offered the eight Jr. Astronauts practical as well as theoretical training courses. The first leg of the space-exploration journey took place at the US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, where the Jr. Astronauts experienced various challenges during the simulated astronaut training. The tumbling and spinning in the "Multi-axis Trainer" allowed them to experience weightlessness and free movement in space. They had the opportunity to produce their own working scale-model rocket. In the "1/6 Gravity Trainer", the team experienced different ways of moonwalking in a simulated one-sixth of the Earth’s gravity. The "Manned Maneuvering Unit" gave them the virtual experience of performing missions outside the orbiting spacecraft. The second leg of the journey took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where they got a close-up view of a real Saturn V rocket and the Space Shuttle Atlantis.  In addition, they got the first-hand view of a space shuttle blasting off and heading into earth orbit. During the trip, the Jr. Astronauts had the opportunity to understand more about the life of real astronauts by meeting with Robert L. Gibson, who had participated in the investigation of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986; and Samuel T. Durrance who flew on a number of space missions.

The parents were delighted to witness positive changes and improvements in their children throughout the program, from enrolment, the two-day-one-night training camp, selection competition, final interview, to the space-exploration journey. The program has enhanced their parent-child bonding.

Ms. Jeanne Sau, Program Commander and Chief Marketing Officer of MassMutual Asia, said, “We are delighted to see the return of the eight Jr. Astronauts, they all lived the “It is Possible!” spirit in facing up outstandingly to various challenges and completed their mission. We hope that this once-in-a-lifetime experience will strengthen their confidence in reaching out for and realizing their dreams. It will be a major milestone for this program next year as it reaches its 20th anniversary. We will continue to support this meaningful program to raise our children’s potential and make their space dreams come true, because we firmly believe: ‘MassMutual – Where Dreams are Made’.”

Pioneered in 1999, the MassMutual Jr. Space Camp Program is the first-ever program providing simulated astronaut training to children from Hong Kong and Macau. Through innovative and unique training experiences, the Program stimulates children’s interest in space exploration and advanced technology. “It is Possible!” is more than just the Program slogan, it encourages children to make their dreams come true by facing challenges courageously. Since its launch, the Program has brought the chance of self-breakthroughs for more than 20,000 children in Hong Kong and Macau, inspiring them to live the spirit of “It Is Possible!”.
